Coleen - bodies

PROFESSIONAL BIO
Coleen’s silk collages, soft sculptures, wearable art, and installations are deeply rooted in the delicate balance of the fragile marine and coastal environment of rural Nova Scotia where she lives. Each piece is informed by the colours, textures, and movement found in nature.

Her artistic practice is informed by formal art training and art history, but the actual making is intuitive. Colour plays a vital role her practice; mixing silk dyes and inventing new colour combinations, helps Coleen express her love for nature’s beauty and vulnerability. She paints original designs on volumes of silk and linen. She then deconstructs and collages these pieces using thousands of meters of embroidery thread and hand stitch, transforming the fabric through an open, playful and exploratory process.

The physical connection to fabric and the act of making by hand is a key part of her process; it is a meditative practice that deeply connects her to the feel and texture of the materials she uses. A lifelong practice of yoga and meditation is also central to Coleen’s creative journey, supporting the mindful and intentional approach that shapes her work

The experience of the viewer is at the heart of Coleen’s work. She is focused on connection and relationships. She believes that textiles such as silk and linen evoke familiarity and historic connection and link the tactile nature of fabric with both the body and human experience.

In an era saturated with digital imagery and constant distractions, her intention is to offer viewers an immersive, sensory experience that is grounded in physicality and thoughtful intention. She has discovered that participating in this way fosters a collective feeling of generosity.

Teaching silk painting workshops and supporting community engagement are integral to her artistic journey. She also makes one-of-a-kind wearable art. It’s in her DNA; her paternal grandmother was a tailor in the Ottawa Valley area of Canada. In all her work we feel her mastery of her materials, her playful spirit and her commitment to excellence. She actively exhibits in both solo and group shows. Her work is in private collections in Canada and Internationally.
