My silk collages, soft sculptures, wearable art, and installations are deeply rooted in the delicate balance of the fragile marine and coastal environment of rural Nova Scotia where I live. Each piece is informed by the colours, textures, and movement found in nature.
My artistic practice is informed by formal art training and art history, but the actual making is intuitive. Colour plays a vital role in my practice; mixing silk dyes and inventing new colour combinations, helps me express my love for nature’s beauty and vulnerability. I paint original designs on volumes of silk and linen. I then deconstruct and collage these pieces using thousands of meters of embroidery thread and hand stitch, transforming the fabric through an open, playful and exploratory process.
The physical connection to fabric and the act of making by hand is a key part of my process; it is a meditative practice that deeply connects me to the feel and texture of my materials. A lifelong practice of yoga and meditation is also central to my creative journey, supporting the mindful and intentional approach that shapes my work.
The experience of the viewer is at the heart of my work, ultimately focusing on connection and relationships. Textiles like silk and linen evoke familiarity and historic connection, linking the tactile nature of fabric with both the body and human experience.
In an era saturated with digital imagery and constant distractions, my intention is to offer viewers an immersive, sensory experience that is grounded in physicality and thoughtful intention. From experience I find that this creates a sense of generosity and sharing.
Teaching silk painting workshops and supporting community engagement are integral to my artistic journey. I actively exhibit in both solo and group shows. My work is in private collections in Canada and Internationally.
